Which countries allow 6 GHz Wi-Fi?
6 GHz is the band that decides whether one SKU can ship worldwide or whether you are building regional variants. It is fully available in some markets, partially available in others, and in China it cannot be approved at all. Here is the state of play, and what it costs you if you find out late.
The short answer
The Wi-Fi Alliance reports that 97 countries have adopted either the full 6 GHz band or a portion of it for unlicensed Wi-Fi. That number sounds like broad harmonisation and is not: only a subset allows the full 1200 MHz, and the difference between "full band" and "lower band only" is the difference between a product that performs as designed and one that quietly does not.
The expensive case is China. The entirety of the 6 GHz band there is allocated to licensed cellular use. A 6 GHz-capable radio cannot be certified, which means a China launch needs a variant — a decision that belongs at design time, not after tooling.

The two editions disagree, and that is the point. The UAE appears as lower-band-only in the 2022 survey and full-band in the 2025 one. A list that flattens both into a single undated table will tell you the wrong thing about at least one market. Why partial-band markets are the trap, not the blocked ones
A blocked market is obvious. You discover it, you build a variant, you move on. Partial-band markets are more dangerous because the device certifies, ships and works — it just does not deliver what the datasheet promised. Wi-Fi 7's 320 MHz channels need contiguous spectrum that a 480 MHz allocation cannot supply alongside other users. Support tickets follow, and the root cause is a spectrum allocation nobody checked.
6 GHz is only half the market-access question
Band availability tells you whether the radio is legal. It does not tell you what the market demands before it will let you sell. Those obligations diverge just as sharply, and they are what actually set your launch timeline:
- Brazil requires all testing to be performed in-country. Foreign test reports are not accepted, so an existing FCC or RED report does not carry over, and a local representative is required to coordinate approval with a designated certification body.
- China requires formal type testing in mainland China before import, sale or distribution, with a CMIIT ID applied for traceability.
- India does not require in-country testing for WPC ETA, but does require a local representative.
- Japan does not require a local representative for MIC technical conformity certification.
- Argentina mandates local testing regardless of any foreign mutual-recognition status.
The pattern that catches teams out: in-country testing and local representative are separate requirements. A market can demand one, both, or neither, and each adds weeks and cost independently.

Does Wi-Fi 6E work everywhere Wi-Fi 6 does?
No. Wi-Fi 6 operates in 2.4 and 5 GHz, which are near-universally available. Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz, and that band is regulated separately in every market.
Is Wi-Fi 7 affected by the same limits?
Yes, and more acutely. Wi-Fi 7's headline feature is 320 MHz channels, which need 6 GHz spectrum. In a lower-band-only market that width is largely unavailable.
If a country allows 6 GHz, can I just ship?
No. Band availability is one requirement among several. You still need the market's type approval, which may involve in-country testing, a local representative, sample submission and labelling — and those are independent of whether the band is open.
